Description
We make these with the emerald syringes for ease of flow
DIRECTIONS:
It is crucial you get an air tight seal against the skin. Some dogs may need hair trimming from around the nipples to obtain this. Usually the teats at the back are larger / fuller than the smaller ones at the front.
You may need assistance with this, however hold the syringe tight against the mums tummy, creating the seal. Once you have a good fit slowly pull back on the plunger. It can be tricky until you get used to this method. Take your time and slowly you should be able to obtain the first milk colostrums which is slightly off white. You can store this in the fridge or freeze it. The normal milk follows the colostrums which is much whiter than the first milk.
If your bitch is nervous or un=sure, keeping her calm and offering re assurance to her may help you extract the milk from her. If she gets too stressed, I would postpone until she calms down. Offering distractions and rewards.
It will take a lot of patience to get this right, so trying different positions may help. Gravity may help so if you can stand the dog up , that may help. Even a few drops of colostrums will be like liquid gold for your puppies, so it’s worth the effort to try and express some if the puppies don’t get it naturally.
You can also use this to express milk from mum’s for any other reason, such as donor milk to give to another litter, or if fostering puppies. You can also use this to help prevent mastitis which can be painful; also you can take pressure off very full mums with only a small litter. Ideally mums milk should dry up on its own, but if there is a demand they will keep producing. So balancing is critical for mum. Always seek care from your own veterinary professional if mastitis is suspected as puppies maybe stopped from feeding from mum, and she may need antibiotics.
If this is the case please contact us if you need supplement colostrum or milk powder to rear your litter.
